- 세상과 나, 존재의 경계에서 그려낸 심점환의 회화세계 -
부산을 기반으로 활동하는 심점환 작가의 이번 전시 **「당신은 누구십니까」**를 선보인다. 이번 전시는 막막하고 불안한 내면, 세상과의 단절, 그리고 존재에 대한 회의와 성찰을 주제로 한다. 작가는 세상과 일정한 거리를 두고 그것을 오시(傲視)하며 바라보는 시선을 통해, 인간의 실존을 탐구하는 회화적 언어를 구축한다.
그의 작품은 전통적 회화 구도인 관폭도(觀瀑圖) 혹은 관수도(觀水圖)의 구조를 차용하지만, 자연의 숭고함 대신 냉소와 아이러니를 담는다. 그의 작품 〈소품-격류〉는 그 예로, 관조적 풍경 속에 등장하는 ‘소풍 나온 돼지가족’을 통해 인간 사회의 위선과 허무를 풍자한다. 익숙한 전통의 형식을 빌리되, 그 안에 현대인의 불안과 삶의 부조리를 이식한 것이다.

Busan-based artist Sim Jeom-hwan presents his exhibition, "Who Are You?". The exhibition explores themes of inner emptiness and anxiety, disconnection from the world, and skepticism and reflection on existence. Through a gaze that maintains a certain distance from the world and contemplates it with a condescending gaze, the artist constructs a pictorial language that explores human existence.
His work borrows from traditional pictorial compositions like "Gwanbokdo" (觀瀑圖) or "Gwansudo" (觀水圖), but instead of embodying the sublimity of nature, it embodies cynicism and irony. His work, "Prop - Torrent," exemplifies this, satirizing the hypocrisy and futility of human society through the "Pig Family on a Picnic" depicted within a contemplative landscape. While borrowing familiar traditional forms, it implants within them the anxieties and absurdities of modern life.
Sim Jeom-hwan's paintings are grounded in the 1920s' Objectivism and Figurative Expression. Through meticulously realistic depictions, he weaves people, objects, and landscapes into a single narrative, revealing a world in which the subject constantly changes according to perception. His paintings extend beyond mere representation, becoming visual narratives that capture the depths of human psychology.
The artist also projects a profound compassion for the hardships and poverty of life, and for the lonely people battling illness and facing death. In them, he sees the fundamental human condition—the pain and beauty of "being alive"—simultaneously. This perspective is not simply a social observation, but rather leads to the ontological question, "Who are you?"
The figures in his paintings symbolize not specific individuals but rather the individual, the self, a being as fragile as dust, swaying within the world. While the artist's gaze may be cynical, it still imbues it with a subtle warmth of compassion and humanity.
This exhibition continues the artist's past work and represents yet another peak in his artistic world. The themes explored in past exhibitions—"the relationship between humans and the world," "inner anxiety," and "portraits of existence"—are condensed and reinterpreted with a lyrical yet sharp perspective in this exhibition.
